Home/About

One truck, one promise, one Austin family

Amp & Air started in 2018 with a single service van and a customer list that fit on an index card. What grew it was never advertising. It was neighbors telling neighbors that somebody finally showed up when they said they would.

Our story

Built the way we'd want somebody to treat our own house

Edward Gordon spent nearly twenty years working for other people's HVAC companies before he started this one, long enough to know exactly which parts of the business were broken.

Every summer he watched the same thing. Customers waited all day for a four-hour window nobody intended to keep. Prices got quoted after the work was finished. And the pressure from above was always to sell the new system, never to fix the old one, because a replacement paid better than a $40 capacitor.

So in the spring of 2018 he bought a used van, put his own name behind the work, and opened Amp & Air on three rules that haven't moved since: show up inside the window you promised, put the price in writing before you touch anything, and quote the repair before the replacement.

His son Ethan came on full time not long after, brought years of electrical work with him, and pushed the company into doing both trades under one roof. That turned out to be the thing customers wanted most. Half of what goes wrong with a comfort system in Central Texas is electrical. Being able to fix all of it in one visit, on one invoice, is why the phone keeps ringing.

Today Amp & Air runs a fleet of trucks across five counties, still family owned, still growing almost entirely on referral. The index card got a lot longer. The rules didn't change.

What hasn't changed since day one

  • The owner's phone number still reaches the owner.
  • Technicians are W-2 employees, never day labor or subs.
  • Nobody is paid a commission for selling you a new system.
  • Late means free. No fine print, no arguing about it.
How we work

Four things we don't negotiate on

Show up

The window we give you is the window we keep. If we're running behind, you hear it from us first, and if we blow it, the service call is on us.

Price it first

Flat rate, in writing, approved by you before a tool comes out of the bag. No meter running, no invoice surprises at the end of a hot afternoon.

Fix what can be fixed

A twelve-year-old system with a bad capacitor needs a capacitor. We'll tell you honestly when replacement is the better math, and when it isn't.

Respect the house

Shoe covers, drop cloths, drywall patched clean, attic insulation put back the way we found it, and every scrap of old equipment hauled off.

Meet the family

Who you're actually hiring

Two generations, two trades, and one very long-running argument about who has to go into the attic in August.

Edward Gordon

Owner & Lead Technician

Manor, TX In the trades since 1999

Edward got into the trades the old-fashioned way, carrying tools for an uncle who installed rooftop units on strip centers off Airport Boulevard, in the kind of August heat that teaches you to work fast and drink water. He learned HVAC first and picked up the electrical side years later, mostly because he was tired of standing in an attic waiting on an electrician who never showed up.

By 2017 he was a service manager at one of the larger Austin contractors, and he'd had enough of watching good customers get sold equipment they didn't need because a quota said so. He bought a used van the next spring, put his own name behind the work, and started Amp & Air.

He still personally reviews every replacement quote over $5,000, and he still takes call rotations during heat waves, partly out of habit and partly because his wife Diane says he is unbearable sitting still. Off the clock you'll find him at a smoker he welded himself, at a Friday night high school football game, or on a Hill Country back road with the windows down.

Ethan Gordon

VP of Operations

Austin, TX Runs the electrical side

Ethan spent a good part of his childhood in the passenger seat of his dad's work truck with a warm Gatorade and a stack of invoices to sort. He started sweeping the shop at fifteen, worked his way up through the electrical side of the business, and was running it by his mid-twenties. He is quick to point out that he got there faster than his father did.

He runs dispatch and the electrical division. The on-time guarantee is his doing: GPS-tracked trucks, arrival texts with the technician's name and photo, and a dispatch board that flags a job before it runs late instead of apologizing after. His read on the business is simple: most people don't leave a contractor over price, they leave over being made to wait.

He also built the Home Energy Survey from the ground up, after one too many customers asked why their bill kept climbing in a house that hadn't changed. Off the clock: mountain biking at Walnut Creek, a standing Sunday swim at Barton Springs, and volunteer wiring work with a local nonprofit that rehabs homes for older Austin residents on fixed incomes.

How we operate

The unglamorous part that matters

Ask any contractor about these three things before you let them in the house. We bring ours up without being asked.

Both trades, one company Heating, cooling and electrical handled by the same team, on the same visit, under one invoice. Nobody gets told to call a second contractor to finish half a job, and nobody spends an afternoon waiting on a truck that belongs to somebody else.
Employees, not subcontractors Every technician is a W-2 employee, background-checked and drug-tested, in a marked truck and a uniform with their name on it. You'll never open the door to somebody we hired for the afternoon.
Insured, permitted, warrantied General liability and workers' compensation coverage, with certificates sent the same day on request. We pull permits on work that requires them, meet the inspector ourselves, and register your manufacturer warranty for you.

Come see if we're as good as the neighbors say

Book a service call, a second opinion, or a Home Energy Survey. Same guarantee either way.
